Acne Treatment – Acne, Pimples & Blackheads
Many acne sufferers look for a quick fix acne treatment but it is important to know how and why acne develops and fully understand your options before making a decision about an acne treatment.
Acne usually begins at puberty due to hormonal changes which cause an increase in oil (sebum) production.
Sufferers of acne usually have larger sebaceous glands that produce more oil (sebum) than people with clear skin. Acne can be hereditary as the size and activity of the sebaceous glands can be inherited. The increased activity of the sebaceous glands at puberty is due to the hormone, dihydrotestosterone.
The development of acne happens in the cells lining the hair follicle wall. Normally these cells are swept out of the follicle, but with acne these cells stick together to form a keratin plug, blocking the hair follicle. This blockage causes retention of oil (sebum) and provides an ideal environment for bacteria to grow.
As the bacteria grow, the sebum is broken down which causes irritation and inflammation. The most severe form of acne results when the build-up of sebum, bacteria and other debris breaks out into the lining of the hair follicle and into the deeper part of the skin. When this happens, healing is slow and scarring often occurs.
Picking and squeezing acne spots should be avoided, because it may cause rupturing of the hair follicle and thus the inflammatory form of acne, resulting in scar tissue.
An effective acne treatment should help to reduce oil and be antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Since acne is a hormonal issue it is also beneficial to consider diet and lifestyle factors. As such acne is not a simple or quick issue to get rid of.
The most common acne treatment is benzoyl peroxide. This is found in many brands of acne treatment.
However benzoyl peroxide produces free radicals in the skin that can cause aging and lessen the skin’s healing power. Benzoyl peroxide sometimes causes adverse side effects such as redness and irritation. The other common ingredient is salicylic acid, found in many types of acne treatment. Salicylic acid sometimes causes adverse skin reactions such as irritation and burning of the skin and the skin can take much longer to heal as a result.
Consequently treating with a product that is both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial in addition to being natural will reduce redness and irritation as well as assisting the skin to heal under this acne treatment.
Tea tree oil is an excellent acne treatment. One acne treatment study has found tea tree oil to be just as effective as benzoyl peroxide, but without the negative side effects like redness and peeling. See “A comparative study of tea-tree oil versus benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of acne,” Med J Aust. 1990 Oct 15;153(8):455-8. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2145499
SKLEER All in One Skin Corrective contains Eucalyptus oil, a well-known anti-inflammatory that is perfect for irritated or inflamed skin, pimples and blackheads. The combination of essential oils in SKLEER: Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Caraway, Cinnamon and Cardamom work synergistically. The proprietary gel formula takes the potent essential oils deep into the skin to optimise healing. The beneficial power of SKLEER lies in the fact that the gel takes the natural ingredients to the lower levels of the skin for enhanced penetration and effectiveness.
The Tea Tree Oil in SKLEER All in One Skin Corrective is antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiviral, a fungicide, insecticide, stimulant and sudorific substance. Tea tree oil can help neutralize or diminish scar marks and other spots left by pimples, boils or acne. Tea tree oil is a sudorific substance that promotes the removal of toxins like uric acid. It also helps remove excess water and salts from the body at the same time as cleaning pores. This is beneficial for acne treatment, for which tea tree oil is often recommended.
The oil of eucalyptus in SKLEER All in One Skin Corrective Gel is both anti-inflammatory and a natural antiseptic, it is also a highly effective soothing agent for the skin. Caraway oil neutralises the effects of histamine and as such can be very helpful in dissolving skin rashes. The SKLEER All in One Skin Corrective gel forms a protective layer on the skin to help lock moisture in and hence creates a perfect environment for healing during acne treatment.
